The purpose of testing with an 8-CMG model is to see if the pulses of thrust smooth out the acceleration more than the 4-CMG version. As each CMG reaches the 270 degree point of its rotation, the clutch mechanism engages and counterclockwise torque is momentarily transmitted down the connecting shaft to the vehicle. This action causes linear motion to occur over the entire body. Each time a CMG passes the 270 degree point a pulse of thrust is indicated on the adjacent graph.
